North Youth and Junior Championships at Ullswater Yacht Club

Published 9:49pm on 4 Jul 2025

In June some of our Elton Juniors went on a weekend away to the largest youth and junior sailing event in the country. With over 190 sailors competing it was a busy but exciting few days. It was amazing to see Elton sailors representing the club across all fleets and bringing home medals despite the challenging and breezy conditions. All our sailors (and parents) had a fantastic time, here's what they had to say:

In the lead up to the weekend I was nervous about conditions on Ullswater but very excited to take part in my first race weekend. On Friday night I enjoyed setting up the boats and meeting up with and getting to know my new friends better. There was a great atmosphere because of the number of sailors and families arriving.

I woke up early on Saturday morning mainly because of the light coming into the tent. Breakfast was sausage butties which were great! We waited for the wind but I tried to keep cool in the lake. It was great to finally get sailing and I loved being out on such a big lake. I sailed faster than I ever had before and even though I did capsize I wasnt the only one and it didnt put me off. It was lots of fun! I was sad not to sail on the Sunday but it was brilliant fun being on the big paddle boards. Winning a recognition medal and coming 2nd in my class was a great way to end the weekend. I had a brilliant time and cant wait to do it again!

The North Region Youth & Junior Championships at Ullswater Yacht Club was my introduction to racing where I sailed for Elton sailing Club in a Topper in the Championship Green fleet.  With nearly 40 other Toppers we experienced sailing in very windy weather which resulted in the sailing being abandoned on the first day.  Luckily the weather improved on the second day and I competed in all races.

It was a fun event and organised very well with clear instructions with lots of help from volunteers and other sailors and I would highly recommend it to anyone thinking about attending next year no matter the experience level.

Luke - Championship fleet (Topper)

After a busy few weeks of exams, I had a fantastic weekend at the Junior champs and it was lovely to catch up with friends from across the north. Despite the range in conditions we managed to get 4 good races in, with plenty of time for fun aswell. Whilst the competition was fierce we were pleased to finish 2nd 29er!

Harriet - Championship Fleet (29er)

Lyla's favourite thing was the sailing and helming with new people. She is proud of her certificate for completing the Rookie fleet. She wasn't too happy with the thunder storm

Sally loved meeting new people and squirting mummy with the water gun. Her favourite thing was the quiz were she won a  giant sweet hamper.
